The Kern County Department of Human Services is excited to announce our new Mobile SNAP Vehicle!

As the third largest county in California, by area, and the twentieth largest county in the United States, Kern County is massive. During the pandemic, we became even more aware of the need to provide access to benefits such as CalFresh and Medi-Cal to those residing in rural communities, who may lack transportation, limiting their access to in-person (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) SNAP accessibility.

Recognizing this need, we learned of the SNAP Technology Improvement Nutrition Assistance Grant, and we applied.

After months of research, writing, and vetting, we were awarded one of only two such grants in the state of California. This grant allowed us to purchase a 35 ft. mobile office RV equipped with four indoor stations allowing us to meet privately with applicants.

The vehicle, designed by our talented DHS Staff, is navy blue with green and white font and is easy to spot. We titled it “Bringing Benefits to You” and in Spanish, “Servicios Moviles Para Usted.”
