Cal-Learn Program for Pregnant and Parenting Teens   

Are you or someone in your household a pregnant or parenting teen? Cal-Learn is a statewide program in California designed to support pregnant and parenting teens in the CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) program. Its goal is to encourage young parents to complete high school or its equivalent, become independent, and build healthy families. Cal-Learn offers three essential services to help teens achieve self-sufficiency and responsible parenting: 

• Intensive Case Management: Connects teen parents with educational, health, and social services to help them succeed. 

• Supportive Services: Provides child-care, transportation, and educational expense support, enabling pregnant and parenting teens to attend school. 

• Bonuses: Incentivizes school attendance and good grades. Teens can earn four $100 bonuses per year based on report card results and a one-time $500 bonus for graduation or achieving a high school diploma equivalent.  

 

Eligibility Requirements  

Cal-Learn is for pregnant or parenting teens on CalWORKs who: 

  • Are under the age of 19 

  • Live with their child 

  • Have not graduated from high school or earned an equivalent 

  • Are not in foster care 

Services Provided to Cal-Learn Participants  

As a participant, you’ll be assigned a Social Service Worker (SSW) who will monitor your school progress and help arrange the following services: 

•  Behavioral Health Services: Individual and group counseling for daily life challenges 

• Substance Abuse Counseling: Support for overcoming drug and alcohol issues 

• Domestic Violence Services: Confidential counseling for domestic abuse, along with referrals for legal aid, community resources, and safe shelters 

• Transportation: Bus passes or mileage reimbursement to support school attendance 

• Ancillary Support: Assistance with school-related expenses and DMV Reduced Fee ID referrals 

• Child Care: Child-care support based on household needs through Community Connection for Child Care 

• Extra-Curricular Activities: Fun and enriching events throughout the year to support personal growth
